Online and live poker crusher Chris Moorman is in a good position to reach the World Poker Tour World Championship (WPTWC) final table for the second straight year.
The $10,400 buy-in tournament, which started with 2,392 entries, played down to the Sweet 16 on Thursday night at Wynn Las Vegas. Michael Berk entered the Day 4 session with the chip lead. But he busted in 31st place for $101,000.
Moorman Ready to Win it All this Time
Moorman bagged the Day 4 chip lead at 30,600,000 with the blinds returning to 125,000/250,000. He finished off the day by eliminating Glen Keogh in 17th place ($176,000) when pocket jacks bested top pair. All remaining players are guaranteed at least $176,000, but the winner on Saturday will take home $3,138,900.
The chip leader who has over $9 million in live tournament cashes, according to The Hendon Mob, finished fourth in this same tournament one year ago, good for a career-best $2,095,300 payday. While he's hoping to close it out this year, he isn't getting ahead of himself.
"There's still so much poker to be played," Moorman told PokerNewsfollowing Day 4. "Obviously, I played seven days last year, so it was even longer. So it's just more of the same, enjoy the moment and see what happens, no pressure. Whatever happens, you know, it's already been a great score, an early Christmas present."
Moorman couldn't quite capture the title last year — Dan Sepiol did for $5.3 million. But he is a World Poker Tour (WPT) champion. The poker legend from England won the $10,000 buy-in WPT LA Poker Classic at Commerce Casino almost 11 years ago for $1,015,460. He has fond memories of that life-changing day.
"It was actually probably the hardest time I've had in poker," Moorman said of his 2014 WPT title. "I dropped down in stakes for a year, dropped all my horses and lost some money myself. I kind of had to rebuild my bankroll. I came into that live tournament after a year off and just ran really hot and, yeah, it was a marquee kind of win."
Gumz In, Badziakouski Out
Mikita Badziakouski spent part of Day 4 atop the leaderboard. But the Belarusian high roller with over $58 million in live tournament cashes fell fast and was eliminated in 19th place for $176,000 about a half hour before the session concluded. Niall Farrell (55th place for $71,000), Mark Seif (51st for $71,000), and Michael Rossitto (39th place for $101,000) were among the players who busted on Thursday.

- Mastering Rummy: Tips, Tricks, and Strategies for All Players 24-12-26
- Players can create a strong hand foundation with this strategy while maintaining options for subsequent melds. When melding, players should also pay attention to what their opponents are doing. You can learn a lot about their tactics & make better decisions for yourself by keeping an eye on the cards they choose to keep or discard. You can concentrate your efforts elsewhere if, for example, an opponent routinely discards particular ranks or suits, which may suggest that they are not pursuing those melds. Players can increase their chances of successfully finishing their hands before others by combining personal melding strategies with astute observation of opponents' actions. 24-12-26
- A key component of Rummy that has a big influence on a player's chances of winning is discarding. The skill of discarding entails not only selecting which cards to take out of one's hand but also taking into account how those decisions may impact the tactics of rivals. An opponent can be denied the card they require to finish a meld by a well-timed discard, but they may unintentionally gain an advantage by a poorly thought-out discard. 24-12-26

- A bloated hand that is challenging to control, for example, can result from drawing too many cards from the stockpile without creating melds. Conversely, if you routinely pick up discarded cards, your opponents may be able to determine what melds you are pursuing and modify their strategy accordingly. To become proficient at drawing cards, one must therefore be able to predict how decisions will affect the course of the game in addition to making snap decisions. Rummy is primarily a melding game, & mastering this technique is crucial to winning. It is important for players to concentrate on building sets and sequences while maintaining the flexibility to modify their strategies in response to the cards they draw or discard. Given that forming sequences frequently call for fewer specific cards than sets, giving them priority early in the game is a useful tactic. 24-12-26
- In the end, becoming proficient at discarding calls for repetition & a readiness to modify one's approach in response to the changing circumstances of each game. Another crucial aspect of rummy that calls for both strategy and intuition is card drawing. The players' current hand & overall game strategy determine whether they should draw from the stockpile or pick up a discarded card. Whether or not the drawn card can form a meld is often the deciding factor when choosing to draw from the stockpile. On the other hand, if a discarded card completes a set or sequence or stops an opponent's plan, it may be beneficial to pick it up. In addition, players should think about how their drawing decisions will affect succeeding turns. 24-12-26
- In essence, Rummy is a game in which players use their card hand to create legitimate sets and sequences. A run of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit is called a sequence, whereas a set is made up of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits. Depending on the particular variant being played, the number of decks used may change, & the game can be played with two or more players. 24-12-26

- Bluffing is one strategy that involves purposefully discarding cards that could give opponents false information about your true intentions or hand composition. An opponent might be forced to make less-than-ideal choices based on erroneous assumptions about your strategy, for example, if you discard a card that appears irrelevant but has the potential to complete their meld. Card counting, or keeping track of which cards have been used or discarded during the game, is another sophisticated strategy. With the help of this ability, players can decide which cards are still in play and which ones their opponents are most likely to draw. 24-12-26
